Social Scene – January 2011

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Welcome to 2011 and another year of TRiumph events which this year sees South Australia host the Nationals in October.

I hope all those people who attended the Christmas dinner had an enjoyable evening, and it was good to see most Trophy winners in attendance.

What a great turn out for the annual after Christmas run on 29th December which saw 59 people congregate at Crafers for coffee before heading off to the Barossa Valley and Kies Winery for lunch.  The day was glorious for a run through the country and it was great to see so many “topless” TRiumphs.   The run took us through Lobethal, Mt Torrens, Mt Pleasant, Eden Valley and down Menglers Hill wih a view over the Valley before skirting around the back of Tanunda and into Lyndoch.   Thanks to Bill and Maggie for their organisation of this run.

Social Report – December 2010

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

The mid week run on 3rd November saw 18 people congregate at Eagle on the Hill Lookout in rather dismal cool weather conditions. See report by Maggie Smith.

The run on 14th November organised by John Sampson was attended by well over 60 people from TSOA and the Austin Healey Sprite Club. The cars were on display on the lawns outside the Greenock Aviation Museum where we all enjoyed a BBQ’d Barossa sausage and salad lunch before having a look around the museum, which housed numerous model aeroplanes,  a World War II Avro Anson and Airspeed Oxford, an early De Havilland Vampire jet and other full size early model planes.  There was also a craft shop to keep the ladies interested while the men wandered through the museum and inspected the machinery on display.  There was an optional run route back to Adelaide via Virginia Nursery.   A number of people took up this option and enjoyed a coffee and a wander around what can only be described as an interesting place to visit, with a large restaurant, gift shop, kitchenware shop and a very large plant nursery and pots etc for outdoors.   This was a very successful Sunday run and the last one for 2010.   Thanks John for your organisation.

The Annual After Christmas run is being held on Wednesday 29th December and heading to Lyndoch to the Monkey Nut Bistro at Kies Winery.   This is always a popular event so if you are not doing anything on that day, please come along and join us.  Bill Smith has organised the route, and we will meet at the Crafers Hotel for coffee from 10.00am departing at 11.00am.

January sees an informal meeting on Tuesday 18th when there will be a short  technical talk by John Sampson on Bundy Tube for the men, and the ladies head off down King William Road to enjoy a coffee and/or gelato and a chat. The annual ice cream run is again being organised by Tom and Judie, who have been running this event for the past 18 years.    Hopefully we will see a warm evening and nice sunset as we drive along the coast from Glenelg to Semaphore Park and Noonies Ice Cream Kiosk.  There is plenty of parking alongside the kiosk and they also serve fish ‘n chips, donuts, coffee, milkshakes etc.

Rory & I  take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

The All Triumph Rally for the Tony Esau Memorial Trophy was held on 17th October in what could only be described as cool conditions.   The rain did hold off and the day ended up quite pleasant.  Ian Rigby (last year’s winner) set a good run through the hills ending up at Strathalbyn where the annual swap meet was also being held.  This gave members the chance to attend the swap meet before or after the club sponsored BBQ lunch.  Thanks to Margie for organising the meat and Peggy for the green salad, Raelene and Faye for supplying cakes and slices.  To all those people who assisted with the cooking and cleaning up thank you.

Congratulations to Margie and Bill who won the event and now have the honour of setting next year’s run.  It was a closely contested observation run with Team Temby coming in second and Roger and Cherrie taking our third place.

The next Sunday run is on 14th November and John requires numbers for the run to Greenock Aviation Museum where they will be putting on a BBQ lunch.  This run is being held in conjunction with the Austin Healey Sprite Club and the cars will be displayed on the lawns at the museum.  Numbers are required by 5th November so please give John a ring if intending to attend.

The Christmas Dinner is on 4th December and payment is required no later than the November meeting.  If you were a winner at the Day of Triumph please come along and collect your trophy and enjoy a three course Christmas dinner (menu is in TRAK) for the member’s price of $40ph and $55ph for non members.  The venue is the Royal Adelaide Golf Club at Seaton where there is plenty of secure parking.  There will be a happy “half hour” from 6.30pm to 7.00pm.

The annual after Christmas lunch run this year is heading to the Barossa and the Monkey Nut Bistro at Kies Winery in Lyndoch.  This run is always a popular event and we hope to see you in attendance.  Bill is the organiser.

Don’t forget there is no meeting in December and January is an informal meeting.

Social Scene – October 2010

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

We have just returned from 3 weeks away taking in Sydney, Canberra and the NSW Nationals so I am unable to make any comments on the mid week run on 1st September organised by Jack or the run on Sunday 19th September organised by Bill & Margie.  However I am sure both these runs were successful and thanks to the organisers.

The next event on the social calendar is the ladies technical session on Tuesday 12th October at Cafe Buongiorno Mtcham at 12 noon.   If you are not doing anything on that day ladies, come along and join us, we would love to see you.

Sunday 17th October is the annual Tony Esau Memorial Trophy Run being set this year by last year’s winner Ian Rigby.   I am sure Ian will have set a challenging run, so get along to Castle Plaza Shopping Centre at 9.00am bringing with you chairs, table, drinks and a clipboard and pen.   Also put the brain and  the Triumph into gear and join in the fun.   A club sponsored BBQ will be held at the destination (a secret at this stage) and we hope to see many Triumphs in attendance.  The winner on the day must be driving a Triumph.

The Technical Meeting on Thursday 28th October is at Performance Alloy Wheels at 60 Kinkaid Avenue North Plympton at 12.45pm.   Bob will need an indication of numbers attending at the October meeting.

Sunday November 14th John is organising a run heading up to Greenock Aviation Museum for a visit and BBQ lunch (cost $10p/h) joining with the Austin Healey Sprite Club.  The cars will be displayed on the lawn so come along on the day.  We will require an indication of numbers at the October meeting for catering purposes.

The Christmas Dinner and Trophy Presentation on Saturday 4th December is being held at the same venue as last year, The Royal Adelaide Golf Club.  Payment in full is required by the November meeting and is the same cost for members as last year ($40p/h) with non members $55.00p/h.

The ladies technical session at Cafe Buongiorno Mitcham on 10th August was well attended with lots of discussion about the up coming NSW Nationals and other things Triumph.   The next meeting will be Tuesday 12th October at the same venue and we hope to see you there.

The run on Sunday 15th August took us up to the South Australian Company Store in Angaston for either morning tea or an early lunch depending on your choice.  The weather could have been kinder as the wind was wicked but the rain generally held off.  There were not too many Triumphs present but it was an excellent run through the hills which are looking their best at the moment, and the coffee and food was very good at the destination.  Thanks to Greg and Lorraine for organising this successful morning run

The next Sunday run is being organised by Bill and Margie and is on Sunday 19th September meeting at 10.00am at Burnside Townhall carpark and heading to Tenafeate Winery at One Tree Hill.

Bob and John are organising a Technical meeting which will be held on Thursday 28th October meeting at 12.45pm at Performance Alloy Wheels 50 Kinkaid Avenue North Plympton.  Please let Bob or John know if you are intending to attend.

I would firstly like to say a big thank you to everyone who has assisted me during the past year.   It certainly makes the job of Social Secretary a lot easier when you have willing helpers.  If you feel you would like a term in the position please nominate as the position becomes vacant as at the AGM on 17th August.

The mid week run on 7th July apparently saw a good number of people attend despite a very secretive destination.  I understand about 30 people headed off to Meadows for coffee and cake, but a number of those did not make it to the lunch venue which was at Echunga.    Thanks to Steve for organising.

The run on Sunday 18th July saw about 30 people turn out in what could only be described as appalling conditions, rain, very low cloud and cold.   There were not too many Triumphs present but everyone who attended enjoyed the lunch at Giovannis at Mt Barker where the order of the day was pasta and/or pizza.  Thanks to Peggy and Brian for organising.

Upcoming runs are all advertised in TRak.

Note for the diary:   This year’s Christmas dinner will again be at the Royal Adelaide Golf Club on Saturday 4th December.   The committee decided to return once more due to the good reports received regarding the venue and a great value 3 course meal.  The price for the dinner has been kept the same for members ($40ph) and non members will be $55ph.   Trophies for the Day of Triumph will be handed out at the dinner, so if you were a place getter please come along and collect your prize.

Another very successful weekender was held on 5/6th June again organised by Bill and Margie who certainly put in a lot of time and effort setting the route to Normanville which criss-crossed the Fleurieu Peninsula on roads little travelled before.   The caravan park at Normanville was clean and comfortable and the camp kitchen had a roaring open fire which everyone was attracted to due to the cold, and sometimes inclement, weather outside.  A huge thanks to all those people who assisted over the course of the weekend, be it purchasing the supplies for pre-dinner nibbles, breakfast, assisting in the cooking of the breakfast and cleaning up both on Saturday night and Sunday morning.   There is a full report on the event in TRAK.   It was great to see “newer” members participating and hopefully they all enjoyed the experience.

The ladies Technical Lunch on Tuesday 8th June saw ten ladies discuss numerous technical issues over lunch at Cafe Symphony at Mitcham.   This was an excellent turn out and hopefully the numbers will continue to increase.  The next “meeting” is Tuesday 10th August at Cafe Buongiorno Mitcham.  Hope to see you there.

The mid week run on Wednesday 7th July is being organised by Stephen who will take us to Meadows Bakery where we will indulge in coffee and cake before heading off for lunch.

The run on 18th July is heading to the hills and ending up at Mt Barker for a casual lunch.

Details of these events are on the calendar.

Social Scene – June 2010

Monday, May 24th, 2010

The day dawned dull, drizzly and quite cold for the mid week run on Wednesday 5th May, but it didn’t stop about 20 people meeting for coffee at Suzette’s Cafe at Hazelwood Park.  The run took us through picturesque valleys of the Adelaide Hills where the country was looking very good after the recent rains.   There was mist rising from the cold damp morning and autumn colours were the order of the day.   The destination for lunch was The Green Man Inn at Ashbourne at 12.30pm and unfortunately time did not permit a second coffee stop in Hahndorf.   The run was set by Andy, who is at present in the States, and took us on some different hills roads to normal.   Thanks Andy.

Despite a very gloomy weather forecast 60 cars turned out on what ended up a brilliant day weatherwise for the Day of Triumph at Civic Park at Modbury on Sunday 16th May.  The cars were displayed in a circle on the park and looked excellent, all gleaming in the sunshine.   Thanks to all those people who helped on the day, gate attendants Alex and Neil; score co-ordinators Alan and Lyle; and all the judges who had a good number of cars to judge.  Thanks also to Margie and Bill for providing the tent, tables and chairs, also Bob Cini for liaising with Tea Tree Gully Council staff and picking up the key.   Bob was at the vemuel very early to ensure entry to the park did not get blocked by other park users.

Congratulations to all trophy winners and especially Noel Schmidt with his newly restored red TR3A who took out the overall prize for the day.  We hope to see all trophy winners at the Christmas Dinner to collect their prizes on Saturday 4th December at the Royal Adelaide Golf Club.

The next ladies technical session is on Tuesday 8th June at Cafe Symphony Cnr Belair Rd and Princes Street Mitcham at 12 noon.   Hope to see you there.

Social Scene – April 2010

The mid week run on 3rd March was well attended by 30 people and headed to Strathalbyn’s Victoria Hotel for lunch.  Members Peter & Jean Boxall from Hervey Bay joined us as they were visiting Adelaide at the time and came along to catch up with SA members.  We were also joined by Fay Esau’s sister and husband who were visiting from Brisbane.

The run through the hills to Woodside on 21st March saw over 35 people sample the sweet delights of Melba’s Chocolates, some doing their Easter shopping.  After leaving the chocolate factory we drove to Millies Bakery in Mt Barker for even more sweet treats and coffee.  Thanks to Arrand who put this run together.  It was great to see Richard and Deb out again in their newly acquired yellow TR7.

Don’t forget the Day of Triumph of Sunday 16th May at Civic Park opposite Tea Tree Plaza Shopping Centre with gates opening at 9.00am.   Judging will commence at 10.30am.   Even if you don’t want to enter your car, come along and put the car on display.   Bring a picnic lunch or buy from the shopping centre opposite.

The weekender on 5th/6th June is filling fast so if you are thinking of coming along please get in touch with either Sue or Margie to book your place.

Social Scene – March 2010

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

All British Day dawned a beautiful morning and saw more than 46 TSOA members display their cars on Uraidla Oval.  All told there were well over 700 cars to be looked at during the course of the day.   The Uraidla Market was frequented by a number of the ladies.   Thanks to all those members who assisted on the day with marshalling, setting up the display area, putting up the shade tents etc.

There is not a lot to report this month but don’t forget the run on 21st March to Melba’s Chocolates and Millies Bakery at Mt Barker.  Details in TRak.

The annual Brekky run is again being set by Lyle & Sue and is on Sunday 11th April, so pack all your goodies for breakfast and come along, meeting at Burnside Townhall at 7.45am and heading, this year, to Gumeracha.

The next ladies Technical Lunch is at Market on Maxwell, Maxwell Terrace Glengowrie (off Morphett Rd south side of the tramline) at 12 noon.   Hope to see you there.

Bill & Margie have again put a lot of time and effort into organising this year’s weekender, which will be held over the weekend of 5/6th June.   This year they are taking us to the Fleurieu Peninsula and, if previous years events are anything to go on, this will be another excellent 2 days full of fun and frivolity.   More details in TRak.
