ALL TRIUMPH 2015 Race weekend Review

Well, it was a great weekend! The weather was good, cold early in the morning, but sunny through the day and no cold wind or rain on both days. Most people used the Saturday Super sprint as their test day on the Saturday, with in the triumphs Trevor Lindsay in his GT6 fastest, Mark Morsillo (Dolomite V8 turbo) second and Ryan Glinn (TR8) third. Poor Mark had a massive shunt at the end of the day, closing the track for the rest of the day. Luckily Mark was fine and walked away after hitting the main fence on the entry to the front straight very hard, not sure what will happen with the car.  Geoff Byrne had gearbox troubles mid-day Saturday that ended his weekend, and Glen Coutinho had a fuel leak that stopped him running all weekend. Rod Carey had to pull out a few days before the event with a piston issue, but made the long trek to support his SA mates and Andrew Gibson had a failed gearbox on the Saturday after installation, so also missed the event this year.

Sunday was some great racing. First there was the 3 regularity runs. Great to have 4 Triumphs running . Sorry Guys I didn’t have your results on hand at the presentation. Results . . .

Run 1 – John Whitaker (Spitfire) 1st, Neil Martin TR7/8 4th, Ken Peters TR7 and Horsct Kirchner Stag but DNFd

Run 2 – Neil Martin 3rd, Ken Peters 5th, John Whitaker 6th and Horsct Kirchner 14th

Run 3 – Neil Martin 3rd, John Whitaker 4t and Horsct Kirchner 5th, with Ken a DNF

We had a great suggestion that next year there will be a trophy for the Regularity Races as well.

For the ATR races, we had 19 runners (would have been 24 without he last minute drop outs). There was heated duels not just at the front of the field, but right through the field.

Race 1 – 1st Howard Glinn (TR8) , 2nd Trevor Lindsay (GT6) second and 3rd Jon Newell (TR8)

You can watch race one on You Tube from Greg Morsillo’s car, type in to You Tube “Greg Morsillo All Triumph Race 1 2015” for all 6 laps (many thanks Greg)

Race 2 – The Reverse Grid Handicap. There was virtually 1 minute difference between the front groups release and the last. It seems like forever to be waiting in the last pack for your release. 1st across the line was Gary Gibson (Dolomite Sprint) who started off the front row with Grant Rawlings (Stag),  2nd was Trevor Lindsay with a great drive from last row of the grid, and I made 3rd place. It was very close with no one knowing with half a lap to run who would win. It looked like it could have been Chris Swingler or Sue Tahir in the front 3 with half a lap to go. It was great for Gary at his first run at the event and the circuit.

Rog & Trev at Mallala Nov 2009

In the All Triumph Trophy Race  – 1st Howard Glinn, 2nd Trevor Lindsay (who pushed me so hard non stop for all 9 laps) and Jon Newell 3rd.  We both got down into the 1.08s.

In the Classes, Roger Lange took out the up to 2 Litre Class in his GR6, Trevor Lindsay took the 2.0 to 3.5 Litre Class in his white GT6, and Howard Glinn the over 3.5 Litre Class in his TR7V8.

Following that we had the All British combined race, with the win going to Trevor Lindsay, Howard second, Jon Newell 3rd and Rhys Morsillo with his first run in the ATR 4th with Greg Morsillo 5th. I must say it wasn’t until I held the Sportscar Trophy that I could sit in awe that Trevor has won it 6 times and Graeme Rutledge 5, so to pip Trevor by such a small margin on the day, no wonder I was mentally exhausted when it finished

I must thank the generosity of Glen Coutinho and Sue Tahir for their sponsorship, and Glen also helps me through the year in many other ways of support beyond simply money, so thank you. To Ken Peters and all his helpers on the flags for the RG race, many thanks. To Terry Donovan and all thise running the MRA round, great event and thanks for allowing us to run on the program. If I missed talking to you on the day, Im sorry, but running the twins in the car Saturday and then racing in the two categories and doing the handicapping during the Sunday keep me very busy.

To all that came to race, especially those from interstate, many thanks and hope you really enjoyed yourself! Also thanks to those that travelled just to watch and support us on the day. I think we delivered a great event to allow many varied Triumphs to come together in the same race, and to showcase to the spectators what a great time you can have owing  a Triumph.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

We have 15 confirmed entrants to the second ATR to be run at Winton as part of their “Champions of Winton” race meet on 28th August 2016. If you are truly interested in running in this event, please please send me a note so I can add you to the list. You certainly aren’t entering and paying yet, just so I can get a feel for the grid size. I am still working with the circuit promoter to see if they would run a mixed field regularity on the same program so will kept you all know.  It would be only a one day event, but is then so much closer to both Victoria and SA. Next we need a sponsor (anyone know someone fitting in Victoria?) and if someone knows of a suitable event we could do on the Saturday would be great. I will send this to all the ATR contacts and see if they have suggestions on this. This seem to confirm we should also work to add a meeting in Morgan park in 2017 to make it a 3 state competition.

SPONSOR WANTED

What has been so instrumental in the growth of the All Triumph Race in NSW has been the generous sponsorship by Sue and Glen from TSOA NSW every year. To help with this first event in Winton next year, we need a sponsor for that round. Ideally someone that can commit $2,000 for the naming rights of the Winton Round of the ATR. You will have your Logo and name added to all emails and advertising done throughout the year and in at least the TREAD monthly magazine article on the ATR. If you have some interest but would like more details, please contact me by Phone or Email for more discussion.

Many Thanks

Howard GLINN

I don’t know about you, but I need to see a photo of a Triumph when I open up the TSOA SA web page, so here is one of my favourites.

Why not load one of your own on to the site – at least for a while, you will get front page exposure of your car and your personal photographic artistry.

Socially Speaking July 2015

It’s now a few weeks since our last annual weekender and as I think back to it with both pride and joy. Margie and I were pleased to put together this weekend which resulted in lots of fun and fond memories. As per usual, spending a weekend with our club members is a delight. Meal times are always enjoyable with the buzz around the room; fun and interesting activities were shared and friendships were built on. Peggy Argent has built on her reputation as being the ‘General’ of the kitchen by organising the ‘men’ to cook breakfast each morning…thanks Peggy. Pleased to say we had 12 Triumphs on the run with no major mishaps! The weekender was our first major run in our new car, (ex Tony Harvie 2500 Saloon) was enjoyed in comfort and reminds us of just how good these ‘old’ cars are.

Bob and Lorraine Cini’s June run to Garden Grove at Golden Grove had us departing from Burnside to Montacute through Cuddlee Creek down Corkscrew Road along Gorge Road, Northeast Road, Hancock Road to Garden Grove. A good lunch was enjoyed by all and plants, giftware, outdoor furniture was there in plenty.  Lorraine Page bought a new Flamingo which we believe is going home for a pink paintjob…and Ian Rigby got the bargain of the day with a $900 outdoor setting without Raelene being there!!

Looking forward to our 50th Anniversary Dinner on July 4th with 60 past and present members attending.

Our next club run is on the 19th July to Strathalbyn departing from Top of Taps at 10.00am.  Our August social event is a Dolphin River Cruise at Port Adelaide.

Having held the Social Secretary role for several years, is it time for someone new to step forward and take over this role from Margie and I with some new ideas and motivation?? We will be prepared to continue to organise the annual weekender, but a break from this position would be welcomed. Talk to us if you want some more info.

Till we meet again

Congratulations to Naomi and Darren and the birth of Zahra on June 12th weighing 3.26kg and 49cm long.  A little sister for Jasmine, Cameron and Lilly to cuddle and enjoy.

The Supper Roster is looking bare….please advise if you can help out….it is not fair that the supper is being provided each month by the same few people….if we are going to continue providing supper at the meetings, then we need more helpers…please let me know if you can assist.

The next Ladies Lunch will be on Tuesday July 14th at Caffe Buongiorno , Belair Road, Mitcham at 12.00pm.  See you there!

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Anniversary dinner!

Kind regards

MSCA 6-Hour Regularity Relay : Team Triumph

June 8th, 2015. Submitted by admin.

Jon Williams has put together a very nice visual summary of the 2015 Team Triumph entry in the 6-Hour event that was conducted on the 3rd May.

In Jon’s words –

“6 Cars, 6 Hours, as many laps as possible in nominated times with penalties for breaking the time – sounds really easy . . . but it isn’t.
Despite having a fantastic Team of Supporters with great communications and brilliant experience, Team Triumph still had to work through everything from clutch failures, power steering problems, rear hub issues and lap time breakouts to finish the day 9th out of 22 teams entered.
Rule number 1 was “Have Fun!” and we did. Thanks to all involved.”

That pretty much says it all – have a look via this link :

Winton Historics 2015

Hi everyone

My yearly trip to Winton went great. My liver agrees too but that’s another story. Lots of Triumphs on display and in the carparks, although no GT6s this year at all. Also there were less Trumpies actually competing – not sure what that suggests. Lots of superb TRs but you’d expect that. My picks were the beautifully restored Vitesse and the sharp Vanguard.

The weather was cold but the rain stayed away until, I kid you not, 10 seconds after the final race ended – then the heavens opened.

My Pi behaved admirably on the trip, although I did pop a leak in a rainstorm at highway speed. Anyway, here are the pix. Just the Triumphs.

2015 TSOA Barossa Weekender

2015 TSOA Barossa Weekender

Day one: Friday.

For those that missed this year’s weekender the following is a bit of what you missed, it’s also a refresh for those that were lucky enough to enjoy what was once again a well organised and executed effort by Bill and Marg Berlemon.

We called it a weekender but it was more like a mini Nationals.

The Friday had us up early meeting at “The Feathers hotel” at 9am. With the cars packed and polished for the event the weather wasn’t too bad, a little brisk but any time off work is always good. (That’s for those that do still work.)

There were 44 adults and 4 children driving all cars of all shapes and sizes 11 of them Triumphs and one Sunbeam. It’s always nice to have a little sun.

First port of call was the “Pomegranate Cottage Café” for morning tea. Word of warning, if you do happen to venture out on one of these weekends you need to be very resilient to the amount of food you are about to consume. Back in the cars we headed out through several little towns and ended up at the “Herbig Family Tree” home (literally) to some of our earlier settlers. Back out on the road we travelled through Williamstown and onto Lyndoch where it was time for lunch at the “Monkey Nut Café” at Kies Family Winery.

After a pleasant stop, it was back on the road through Tanunda, Nuriootpa and heading towards Truro we stopped in at “Wolf Blass Wines” for a little tasting session, some of us just happy with the coffee and chocolate treats.

After a short stop we all moved onto “Luhrs Cottage” a little place built from mud and straw with a framework of red gum beams. Nice little place set up with rooms of old items used in the days when it was a lived in home. “You needed to duck no matter how tall you are”

It was now time to head through the hills and country side to the nights stop in Tanunda.

After booking in we all met for the first evening’s meal cooked for us by the operators of the park. With some discussion over a few bottles of wine and our day done most hit the rooms for an early bed. Thank you to everyone from both Chuck and me for the birthday cakes, we won’t go into the numbers only that they are getting up there. Lucky we only had sparklers and not candles especially on chucks   😉

Next morning a few of us were up to cook the morning breakfast. Think I found the slowest BBQ in Adelaide. After feeding it several 20 cent pieces over time and fighting the hot plate (I use that term loosely) we had the hungry crowd gathering. I think it took around 15 minutes to cook four eggs so our standby team in the community room finish them off while Dean and I cooked the Bacon.

Day 2: Saturday.

Out on the road again heading to Bethany and onto the “Farmers Markets” I think everyone had a good time fossicking around all the local tasting plates and talking with the locals. With the morning shop done and the fresh veg in the boot we were off again to Angaston for lunch at “D&Ms Bakery.” We all strolled up and down the street and ended up at the local Blacksmith shop for an exhibition on bashing steel into different shapes. I liked how the old guys had the young kids on the bellows priming the fire. This also allowed the women to catch up outside and have another chat.

The next destination and yet again more food, was at “Gully Gardens” where we had a bit of an informative session on the dried fruit process and a history lesson on their business. After a bit of shopping in the front store room we all headed out and back to the park but not before passing through and a short stop in Bethany being the oldest German Settlement in the Barossa.

Saturday night started with another wine tasting provided by “Whistler Wines” They saved the day after the original winery pulled out at the last minute. Not to be beaten Bill took up the challenge and with a bit of help from the Parks owners he scored a hit. The feast was a full roast dinner provided and cooked by one of the local farmers. Sorry forgot to take down the name but if you do have a function in the area see Bill for the contact you won’t beat it.

We all rolled out of the community room back to our accommodation to get ready for the final day.

Day 3: Sunday.

Another Breakfast of pancakes, cream, Jams, toast and cereal had us filled primed and ready to pack up and head out for the last days events.

Heading out to “Seppeltsfield wines” we arrived a bit early for the openings, so we all had a bit of time to walk the magnificent grounds and also take in the local Knife maker. Once open, several braved the challenge for a bit more wine tasting (bit early for most but never let it be said we don’t support the locals.) Others had time to browse through the Jam Factory looking at the art displays. After another coffee downed we headed out to “Maggie Beers” for a look at the preservatives and yes more wine tasting.

The last part of the day had us out to Greenock to the “Aviation Museum” where the owner had the BBQ done for us before we strolled around the displays.

After one ring in was kindly moved out of shot by Neil (Apparently it’s the other Triumph) we lined the Triumphs up for a final photo shoot against the open backdrop.

Some of us had to end the day early, but the rest had the opportunity to view the tuned down Merlin engine fire up and I’m sure it was appreciated by all.

So much happened over the 3 days that I don’t think I captured all in this short report but I’m sure that there will be a lot of conversation over the next few meetings and gatherings.

Again, a real big thankyou needs to go to Bill and Marg for all of their efforts and planning that went into this weekend. Drawing up the run and getting all of the locals to support the group and cater for us each day is no easy feat, great job and appreciated by all. Value for money you bet.

Regards

Ian and Raelene Rigby for the group
